Meshtastic
One popular mesh network is called Meshtastic. We have many nodes in Central Illinois running Meshtastic.
Here are the settings that we use here in the area.
Settings - Current
| Name | Value |
|---|---|
Modem preset |
LongFast |
Region |
US |
Frequency Slot |
20 |
Frequency |
906.875 MHz |
Hops |
3 (use up to 7 if you're on the fringe) |
Warning
Starting from v2.8, the Meshtastic firmware will default to LongTurbo instead of LongFast in the US. This is due to FCC regulations that require a specific minimum bandwidth (500 kHz) instead of the current 250 kHz that LongFast uses.
Device role
| Name | Value |
|---|---|
CLIENT_MUTE |
This is what most people should be using for portable nodes. It does not rebroadcast traffic but still allows you to send and receive messages. |
CLIENT_BASE |
This rebroadcasts your favorited nodes immediately. Great for roof or attic nodes as well as a vehicle node with external antenna. |
CLIENT |
Similar to CLIENT_BASE but all nodes are rebroadcasted equally. |
ROUTER |
Only use this if your node will be higher than all the other nodes in the area. (tall tower, skyscraper, grain elevator, etc.) |
ROUTER_LATE |
This version of router waits for the main router in the area before rebroadcasting packets. |
For other device roles, please see the Meshtastic documentation for further explanation.
